Typographic Hierarchy

Writer's picture: Ava SAva S

Typographic hierarchy shows readers what text is the most important and what you should focus on. There are many things that show typographic hierarchy. The first option is size which is the most common because it immediately draws the reader's attention. Next is weight. You can use a bolder type face or bold your text to add emphasis to it. Using color is another option. By using darker or lighter shades of a color you can create hierarchy. You can use contrast to create hierarchy by using different type sizes, weights and styles between headers and body text. Also by using uppercase characters for things like titles and headings to help separate them from other text such as text in the body. Lastly you can use position and alignment to create hierarchy.

There are three levels of hierarchy any design should have. These include a heading, subheading and body text. You then need to decide how you are going to distinguish between them. These are the main guidelines to any typographic hierarchy. By following these rules and experimenting with them you have the ability to create visually pleasing designs.
